The Big Book of Boy Stuff by Bart King (Gibbs Smith, 2004)
These books are very similar in format and provide an all over guide for any tween boy or girl looking for the answers to the tough questions ranging from how to make a real good fart noise to how to avoid the mean girls and to not be a mean girl yourself. Formatted in a reference type layout, both these books provide advice on how to deal with bullies, jerks, mean girls, or any other name you would like to call it. The format of the book allows serious topics to be discussed in a camouflaged way and solutions are given for ways to deal with issues that may arise from bullies and other social mishaps. Not only are bullies addressed in each book, but also ways to build self-esteem and to recognize your true friends are also provided, but always in such a way that any tween reading the book would not feel like they are being preached to. Although neither are winners of awards, The Big Book of Girl Stuff was reviewed and recognized as a sequel to The Big Book of Boy stuff in School Library Journal and Publishers Weekly.
Audience Level: Grades 4 – 8
